My Story...

Seven years ago I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and Myofascial Pain Syndrome. I was extremely ill. My fatigue was so bad that I couldn't drive a car and my husband would have  to wash my hair for me. At 30 years old was in the aquatic physical therapy with individuals that were in their 80's. My pain levels were so high that I couldn't imagine existing another 40 years in that much agony and contemplated ending my life. I had zero quality of life. I was on all sorts of preventative and pain medications. I had chronic migraines, nausea and digestive issues, heart problems, extreme fatigue and intense pain.

It took me five years and numerous doctors, specialists and tests before getting a proper diagnosis. I had one doctor recommend that I talk to mental health because all his "tests" came back normal. Really?! If he would have ran a simple TPO blood test he would have found what was wrong. I battled debilitating symptoms for years, collecting different diagnosis and misdiagnosis along the way. I went through a ridiculous amount of testing...spinal tap, colonoscopy, endoscopy, all sorts of ultrasounds, stress test, echo-cardiogram, brain MRI, and sooooo many labs. I had a neurologist, cardiologist, endocrinologist, physical therapist, psychiatrist  and gastroenterologist on top of my primary care physician. After 5 years and all those specialist, all we knew was that I had mitral valve prolapse in my heart and GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease).

The diagnosis...

I finally got my first diagnosis of Myofascial Pain Syndrome, Fibromyalgia's sister. It was devastating googling what that diagnosis meant for me. I cried and cried. It felt like my life had been robbed from me.  A few months later I got another diagnosis from a nurse practitioner that ran a lab no one else had yet. I had my answer to many of my symptoms, she told me I had Hashimoto's, an autoimmune disease of the thyroid, it was life long and could be managed with medication. I was given thyroid meds and sent on my way.  Again, devastating! No direction, no information, no hope, just meds. But, I finally had answers. Fast forward a year and a thyroid ultrasound later, I was informed I was high risk for Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma after they found some thyroid nodules. Again, devastating! Every year I had to have a thyroid ultrasound to ensure they hadn't grown. I can't even tell you how scary that one day a year was. So many times I left the doctors in tears.

I tried everything in conventional medicine! And you know what... none of it worked for me. The medications made me sicker. Diet and lifestyle were never talked about. I was still eating the Standard American Diet (SAD).  I ended up abusing my pain meds and damaging my body further. The thing about pain medication is even if you are having a tolerable pain day, the withdrawal pains from the meds are just as bad. So, you end up dosing even though you don't need to because of the horrible withdrawal that begins. This in turn can contribute to addiction in some people. So, after all of this where am I today? How did I get from severe chronic illness to getting my life back?

Getting my life back...

I decided I had nothing to lose and tried the alternative holistic field for help. I went into it with an open mind, but still a little skeptical. After all, nothing else had helped me. I worked with an FNTP and had improvement. She knew things about the body that all those doctors seemed to be missing. This was true health care. It ignited a fire in me to find out all I could. I decided I had to go to school to become an FNTP and that's really when I began to get deeper healing. Even with eating a Paleo diet and taking an insane amount of supplements, I still was battling symptoms.

It wasn't until going through my FNTP schooling that I went on an elimination diet and discovered I had many hidden food sensitivities to healthy foods. That's right, some healthy foods were not compatible with my biochemistry. These healthful foods were causing some serious symptoms in my body. I worked on removing these triggering foods and incorporating nutrient dense, healing food to feed my cells and repair my body. I addressed leaky gut, deficiencies and imbalances in my body. I removed toxins from my lifestyle and had help from different therapist to address childhood trauma. I incorporated deep breathing, guided visualization and affirmations. I slowly got off my pain meds as the inflammation in my body decreased. I no longer take them. I've had so much healing in my body that my thyroid ultrasound last year showed that the nodules are gone!!! There are now scientific studies on the healing power of the Autoimmune Paleo Protocol (AIP) and thyroid disease. Healing is a holistic process that needs to address all the aspects of an individual; body, mind and spirit.

A little more about me...

I am a mom of two teens, and have been with my husband, the love of my life for 17 years. We are a neuro-diverse family with a variety of diagnoses of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), ADHD, OCD and anxiety.  Food eliminations and adding in nutrient dense foods in our diets have made a phenomenal difference in our lives and symptoms. We have discovered foods like dairy sets one of our kid's SPD and ADHD symptoms into overdrive.

We are survivors of toxic mold. We lost all of our possessions to it and have been working on rebuilding our life and health since then.
